Summer Scholars Program Successfully Concluded

Summer 2012 Upward College Scholars Program has successfully concluded today July 28, 2012.

The celebration of project completion was held in conjunction with College & Youth Summit where BACI Summer Scholars gave presentation about their group research findings with actions recommendation.

Over seven weeks, High School students from Burma conducted a university level group research project on a variety of topics, including Financial Literacy and Management, Motivations for College, Secondary Migration (when refugees move to a different state from the one where they were primarily resettled), and Health and Nutrition that are the most compelling issues faced by the incoming community in Indianapolis.

More than 100 participants and sponsors at the event include Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), Ivy Tech Community College, Indiana State Government (21st Century Scholars Program), Kimu Restaurant, Cardinal Insurance, Indiana Family Institute, Chin Center, Middle and High School students and Parents.

Not only the program have been able to assist the scholars with their English improvement, research skills, leadership development, and ultimately prepare them for college and success, but also we hope that what the scholars have produced (academic research papers with action recommendation) will continue to serve as very important documents that our community stakeholders will be consulting with in several years to come which we hope will bring long-term positive impact on our community, said Lian Sang, Program Manager.

The program was implemented with the support from SYPF (Lilly Endowment & Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust), Indiana Chin Baptist Church (ICBC), and University of Indianapolis.
