BACI Honored with “Outstanding Community Partner of the Year”

INDIANAPOLIS, Feb. 24, 2020 — The Burmese American Community Institute (BACI) was given the “Outstanding Community Partner of the Year” award today by Campus Compact Indiana at its 10th Annual Summit Awards Luncheon, held at Ivy Tech Community College Conference Center.

San H Thang, Vice Chairman of the BACI Board of Directors, remarked that the institute is honored and grateful for the recognition and offered his appreciation to the Campus Compact, and all partner Institutions, especially to the University of Indianapolis who nominated BACI. “I am absolutely delighted with this honor, and give my deepest thanks to the entire BACI staff and Executive Director for their tireless effort and outstanding leadership for the betterment of the shared community,” he said.

Emphasizing the importance of a mutually beneficial partnership in the rapidly evolving 21st Century collaborative environment, Dr. Mary C. Moore, Professor and Associate Provost at the University of Indianapolis echoed that the BACI was nominated for the Outstanding Community Partner of the Year award in recognition of the multiple ways that the “Institute supports university faculty and students in service-learning initiatives, with opportunities for teaching and research, and by seeking community-based collaborations”.

“As partners, we are committed to building an inclusive and vibrant community on the Southside of Indianapolis,” said Dr. Moore.

“This recognition reflects the reciprocally beneficial comprehensive partnership we have built together with the University over the years which is impacting the lives of thousands of the community members positively,” said Mr. Elaisa Vahnie, Executive Director of BACI. “While we are committed to sustaining and strengthening our collaborative partnership locally by creating new opportunities, we also look forward to expanding it through international service-learning and other educational projects in Myanmar in the years to come”.

Comprised of over 40 Institutions and 70 College & University campuses, including prestigious institutions such as Indiana University Bloomington, Purdue University, and the University of Notre Dame, the CCI is a partnership of college and university presidents and chancellors who have committed themselves, and their institutions, to their communities through mutually beneficial and meaningful collaborations to create engaged citizens and vibrant communities.
