INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MYANMAR

February 5-12, 2022

Format: virtual and in-person (in Indianapolis, Indiana)

CALL FOR PAPERS

Submission deadline: December 31, 2021

The National University of the Union of Myanmar (NUUM)-Global Campus, in collaboration with its partners, is organizing an international conference with the objectives of:

  • Promoting critical analysis and a deeper understanding of the challenges Myanmar is currently facing,
  • Identifying challenges and opportunities for responding in a unified way to the conflict in Myanmar and approaches to building a new Myanmar and develop strategies and approaches to building a new Myanmar, and
  • Fostering dialog and debate among stakeholders from diverse backgrounds, including elected MPs and government officials of Myanmar, INGOs, CSOs, human rights groups, media, academics, etc.

The program will include:

  • Keynote speech
  • Expert panels
  • Panel presentations of academic papers and Roundtable Discussions

The full program is forthcoming.

Expert panels are expected to cover the following topics: humanitarian assistance, the Civil Disobedience Movement and civil war in Myanmar, provision of public goods and services, health, education, constitutional and institutional reform, and the role of the international community in change in Myanmar.

We are inviting scholars and researchers to submit papers to present in panel sessions. Topics for papers and panels may include but are not limited to the following, in the context of Myanmar:

  • Business and economy
  • Environment, land, and natural resources
  • Society and culture
  • Gender and equity
  • Law and governance
  • Education
  • Public health
  • Climate change
  • Conflict and peace
  • Diversity and inclusion
  • Human rights and political freedom
  • Borderlands
  • International relations

Guidelines for submission of abstracts:

  • Abstracts must be 200-250 words in length, in English
  • Abstracts should be submitted to springpapers@umyanmar.org
  • The deadline for submission of abstracts is December 31, 2021
  • Notification of acceptance of abstracts will be given by January 10, 2022

Full papers should be 5,000-10,000 words in length, in English. Submission is optional but we would appreciate receiving the full papers by January 31, 2022.

About BACI
The Burmese American Community Institute (BACI) is a non-profit organization founded in 2011 that provides educational and vocational support to the Burmese community in greater Indianapolis. BACI supports community members regionally, nationally, and globally through strategic partnerships and advocacy.

About NUUM
The National University of the Union of Myanmar (NUUM) was established in July 2021 under the auspices of the Burmese American Community Institute in consultation with its partners and stakeholders, especially with diverse groups of people in Myanmar. It currently offers six certificate programs to Myanmar students through online courses taught by instructors from Myanmar as well as friends of Myanmar from around the globe. In addition to providing teaching and learning opportunities, NUUM contributes to reform efforts and building systems for future democratic institutions, serves as a hub for academic research, scholarship, and intellectual inquiry, and generates ideas for innovations and policy debate, in support of democracy in Myanmar.
