“President John F. Kennedy stood right here in front of the Capitol building in 1961 and said “”Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.”

In brief remarks at the event, Elaisa Vahnie, BACI Executive Director asked, “As we celebrate this historic month, let us ask ourselves the same question – what can we do today for this great nation – the land of freedom and opportunity that has offered so much for us as well as for our people?”

This event was organized in conjunction with the BACI Education and Leadership Trip designed for the youth to have the opportunity to learn from, and, interact and engage with decision and policy makers in Washington D.C. while appreciating American history and its democratic institutions.

Participants in the program also met with officials of the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Congressional Offices, the National Unity Government of Myanmar, and the U.S. Institute of Peace. In these meetings, they discussed a wide range of issues facing the people of Myanmar locally and globally, including U.S. Foreign Policy towards Myanmar and the effort to support peace and Democracy in the Southeast Asia nation.

Last year, July was proclaimed by the Governor of the State of Indiana in recognition of the achievements of Burmese Americans in Indiana including their active participation in State’s economy, high educational performance, and vibrant cultural diversity they bring whereby enriching Hoosier communities across the state and making it a better place for all.
