Civic Participation & Community Engagement

Burmese American Community Institute works hard to assemble events that invite the diverse community to be engaged in what we do. Our goal is to foster diversity and inclusion.

Here are some examples of events:

  1. Union Day

Myanmar communities in Indianapolis celebrated the 72nd Myanmar Union Day, honoring the signing of the Panglong Agreement on Feb 12, 1947, a historic meeting after World War II forming the Union of Burma, with equal rights and privileges guaranteed to all ethnic groups in the country. Held at the University of Indianapolis, the event was attended by over 300 members of the community, including publicly elected officials, dignitaries, academia, and civil society leaders.

2. Asian Festival

Indianapolis celebrated Asian culture and diversity through its 11th Annual Asian Festival, hosted by the Asian American Alliance, Inc. (AAAI) and the Burmese American Community Institute (BACI). The annual festivities, held at the Indiana State Museum, featured Myanmar (also known as Burma) through traditional dance, fashion, music, and food.
