International Conference on Myanmar to Chart a Path Forward to Democracy in Myanmar
INDIANAPOLIS, January 30, 2022 — The Burmese American Community Institute (BACI) and the National University of the Union of Myanmar – Global Campus (NUUM), in partnership with co-hosts and collaborators, will be hosting the Spring Flowers International Conference on Myanmar from February 5 to 12, 2022.
The conference will bring together local, national, and international actors from diverse backgrounds in an effort to support peace and democracy in Myanmar (Burma).
Indiana Govenor Eric Holcomb will help launch the unprecedented conference, in which former U.S. Ambassador to Myanmar Scot Marciel, U.S. Senator Todd Young, Assistant Secretary of State Daniel Kritenbrink, and other senior officials of the U.S. Government will be speaking.
His Excellency Duwa Lashi La, Acting President of the National Unity Government of Myanmar (NUG), His Excellency Mahn Winn Khaing Thann, Prime Minister of the NUG, His Excellency U Aung Kyi Nyunt, Chairman of the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH), and various other senior leaders of the NUG and the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) and the Myanmar democracy movement will deliver key messages for the people of Myanmar as well as international stakeholders.
More than 60 scholars and researchers, many of them world-renowned, and over 70 other speakers from activist and advocacy groups, rights groups, student unions, university councils, and international organizations, will be making presentations and participating in discussions on constitutional development, democracy, institution building, and international affairs.
“Our hope is that through substantive and serious debate and discussions, the conference will be able to generate ideas that help provide strategic direction and policy guidance for the democratic movement as a whole and help shape the future of Myanmar,” said Elaisa Vahnie, executive director of BACI.
To maximize inclusive participation and dialogue, the program will include keynote speeches, panel presentations of academic papers, expert panels, roundtable discussions, reports by NUG officials, and special sessions. Cultural performances will also be featured.

These global conversations around Myanmar and our Burmese community are so important to us at the IUPUI Office of International Affairs, our student body at IUPUI – more than 150 who are Burmese themselves – and our local and global community.”

The National University of the Union of Myanmar (NUUM) was established in July 2021 under the auspices of the Burmese American Community Institute in consultation with its partners and stakeholders, especially with diverse groups of people in Myanmar. It currently offers six certificate programs to Myanmar students through online courses taught by instructors from Myanmar as well as friends of Myanmar from around the globe. In addition to providing teaching and learning opportunities, NUUM contributes to reform efforts and building systems for future democratic institutions, serves as a hub for academic research, scholarship, and intellectual inquiry, and generates ideas for innovations and policy debate, in support of democracy in Myanmar.
